Ms. Sophie Barry practices in civil and commercial litigation since 2004. Her former litigation practice extended to all aspects of litigation, including alternative dispute resolution methods. Since 2013, Sophie’s practice has focused on managing litigation and investigations for private and public organizations and providing legal opinions and strategic advice regarding dispute prevention.
In this role, Sophie manages, with her clients’ executives and external legal counsel, ongoing litigation files, assesses reserves for accounting purposes, identifies strategies, tools and relevant resources, in order to minimize financial and reputational risk for her clients, and prevent potential litigation. Her litigation and investigations management practice leads her to manage and optimize legal expense budgets and to collaborate on various presentations to boards of directors.
Sophie also worked in major and complex files, which have allowed her to develop sound experience in document management and review.
With her experience in construction law litigation, Sophie is also called upon mid-project to advise and guide contractors, owners and consultants to prevent litigious situations or settle them promptly during the construction project.
At Delegatus, Sophie manages litigation and investigations for major pan-Canadian public organizations.
Before joining Delegatus, Sophie worked within the Norton Rose Fulbright Canada litigation group (previously Ogilvy Renault).
- Management of two class actions (United States and Canada) for a major public company in the mining industry.
- Management of an extensive litigation portfolio for a major public company in the digital and print marketing sectors.
- Represented Bombardier in disputes regarding issues that arose in within the construction of airplanes.
- Represented Hydro-Québec for litigation regarding Churchill Falls, by preparing and revising long and complex appraisals of the financial and economic aspects of the hydroelectric sector.
- Represented the Société d’énergie de la Baie-James in a dispute regarding cost overruns in the execution of major construction work.
- Represented a large energy company in a long-term commercial arbitration regarding a company’s valuation.
- Acted as KPMG defense counsel in the Norbourg class action suit.
- Represented the Attorney General of Canada in the Commission of Inquiry into the sponsorship program and advertising activities.
- Represented major pipe and concrete product manufacturers for disputes following alleged manufacturing defects.
